Shanti: Taste of India reflects a healthy appetite for peace

Mohammad Askandar Alam believes individuals can make a difference. At his Huntington Avenue restaurant Taste of India, Alam serves Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani dishes because, he says, the cuisines of all three often-feuding neighbors belong under one roof.

"Pakistan, India, Kashmir, Bangladesh, so much war," lamented Alam one recent evening. "I want everyone to come together; I want everyone to come together and eat."
  Toward that end, Alam is renaming Taste of India, Shanti: Taste of India. Shanti is Sanskrit for "peace."

Alam calls it a dream come true. The 34-year-old Bangladesh native is a veteran of the Boston dining scene; he worked at Maison Robert for 10 years, rising from busboy to assistant manager. Alam and real estate agent Solmon Chowdhury opened their first Taste of India in Dorchester in 2000 and this second location, just down the block from Symphony Hall, in July 2001. He hopes Taste of India-Shanti patrons will find food for thought in chef Nalini K. Nath's delectably exotic fare.
